Library Construction Progress – from the beginning

As you’ve likely noticed, major construction is in high gear at our Library. Our accessibility project started over 6 years ago. We were able to secure a grant through the Division of Library Development for the restroom and ramp. At the same time, we were working on a second grant through now-retired State Senator Amadore to complete the project of an addition and elevator. That grant was approved just before COVID, when state funding was frozen. When the funds were released, costs had skyrocketed so we needed additional grant and private funding to continue the accessibility project. We received several large private donations for naming rights for some of our Library rooms. Earlier this year, we received a grant through state Senator Hinchey. We also secured additional Division of Library Development grants. With all of these grants in place, work commenced in earnest in late summer.

At this time, the footings and foundation for the addition are complete. The contractors have started to open the back wall of the Library to connect to the addition. Entrance to the Library from the ramp will be through a new handicap door at the top of the ramp, leading to the addition. The new addition will also house the mini elevator to the lower level. Adult non-fiction books, which were moved to the lower level on wheeled carts at the initial start of the project, will be moved back to the main floor. Upgraded heating, AC and air circulation on both floors will improve the comfort for everyone in the Library.

Construction projects always bring extra noise and dust. We appreciate everyone’s flexibility and understanding during this time, including our dedicated staff. When the project is complete in the Spring of 2025, we will finally be able to welcome all of our neighbors and friends into all levels of the Library. Mr. and Mrs. Evarts asked that the community build a Library in Athens. We’d like to think we’re finally honoring their request to build a Library in Athens for Everyone. If you’d like more information on naming opportunities or other ways to help, please call the Library or email our director Kim at director@drevartslibrary.org.
